Saginaw wrestlers showcased their skill at the Region 1-5A tournament on Feb. 9-10. Andrew Diaz emerged as a standout, advancing to the semifinals in the 190lb weight class. Winning his first match in overtime and securing a 7-3 victory in the quarterfinals, Diaz avenged a district tournament loss in the semifinals by defeating Lubbock Coronado 15-7. Although facing a tough match in the finals against Dumas, Diaz's second place finish earned him a spot in the State Wrestling Tournament. Duece Wines finished his junior year season in the Top 12 in the region. Wines dropped his first match but bounced back with a win by fall in the consolation bracket before being knocked out of the tournament. The boys team finished 24th out of 45 teams.

On the girls side, Galilea Casas and Daniella Inana displayed outstanding performances. Casas finished sixth in the Region, earning a podium spot in only her second year of wrestling. Inana, a junior, secured a podium finish as well, ending in sixth place. Amaya Briscoe battling an ankle injury went 1-2 on the first day. She was able to secure team point and finished Top 12 in the region. The girls team concluded in 17th place out of 45 teams in Region 1.

Diaz competes at the State Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 16-17 at the Berry Center in Cypress, TX.
