A cold and breezy evening awaited the Lady Rough Riders of Saginaw, as they opened the second half of district play against Northwest on Tuesday, Feb. 21.
Before the game, the Lady Rough Riders welcomed the Lady Hawk soccer team of Highland Middle School, and recognized them in front of the hometown crowd for Middle School Night. The Lady Hawks will kick off their middle school season at the end of March.
On the field, Saginaw and Northwest were in a battle from the start. Saginaw had Northwest on their heels for much of the game, and were able to generate several scoring opportunities, but just couldn't find the back of the net.
Claudia Fuentes nearly found the net towards the end of the first half, off a corner kick; but the officials ruled no goal.
Defensively, the Saginaw defense was flying all over the field blocking kicks, and preventing Northwest from getting much going. Christion Hunter was a force in goal throughout the evening, earning player of the game honors along with Jacky Rangel.
Northwest pushed a goal across late in the second half, and Saginaw came up just short at the end falling 1-0.
After a bye week, the Lady Rough Riders continue the district slate with a trip to Aledo High School on Friday, Feb. 24. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
