Lady Rough Riders Prevail on Senior Night

With district play looming, the Saginaw Lady Rough Riders took the court against Denton Ryan on Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Lady Rough Riders were victorious in five exciting sets; 28-30, 25-17, 25-23, 17-25, and 15-11.
Before the game all of their seniors and their parents were honored and thanked for their contributions to the Saginaw volleyball program over the past four years. Saginaw also gave gifts to the four seniors on the Denton Ryan volleyball team.
On the court it was a playoff like atmosphere, as Saginaw and Denton Ryan traded point for point.
In the first set, the Lady Rough Riders trailed 16-9, before making a furious comeback to tie the match at 24 off a kill from senior Bailee Hewitt. The teams traded the next few points, with the combination of senior Caroline Bacon and Hewitt responsible for two straight points. Denton Ryan prevailed in the first set, but the excitement of the match was just getting started.
Saginaw came out on fire in the second set, jumping out to a 9-1 lead, capped off with a kill from senior Kayla Jenkins. Bacon had a monster kill to give Saginaw a 14-4 lead, and Saginaw took set two with Bacon responsible for the set winning kill.
In the third set, the Lady Rough Riders trailed 19-12 before mounting a comeback. Camille Williams tied it at 23 with a kill, Bacon had a kill to give them the lead, and Kennedie Caldwell finished off the win with an ace.
Denton Ryan claimed the fourth set victory, despite Saginaw pulling within five points late in the set.
The fifth set saw another back-and-forth contest; with Saginaw pulling away late and Hewitt responsible for the game winning point.
Offensively, Hewitt led the way with 16 kills and contributed 13 digs. Bacon had 31 assists, 12 kills and nine digs. Defensively, junior Calista Miller and senior Kylee Turner each had 15 digs.
Saginaw will hit the road to take on Keller Central on Friday, Sept. 2 for a 5:30 p.m. start. They'll travel to take on Trimble Tech next Tuesday, Sept. 6, and will begin district play at Northwest on Friday, Sept. 9.
